The Municipal Band of Santa Cruz de Tenerife was born after the motion signed by several Councillors, in the Plenary Session held on June 25, 1902, in which it was agreed: “to create a music academy financed with public funds and to organize a municipal band attached to it; to appoint a special commission that, advised by musicians and residents, will formulate a project of bases for the organization of said Academy and Band”.
In 1903 the first regulation was drawn up that included the rules of operation of the Band and it was renamed
Municipal. Its first performance was on May 1 of the same year, in the Alameda del Príncipe Alfonso.
In its recent history, the Municipal Band has been recognized in Plenary Agreements of the City Councils of Gúímar and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The “Centro Cultural y de Recreo” Society of Arafo awarded it the “Añavingo” Prize in the 1999 edition.
In March 2003 the Municipal Band travelled to the Valencian Community where it carried out a cultural exchange with the Municipal Band of Valencia, who also commemorated the Centenary of its foundation, performing on Sunday 31st at the Palau de la Música. During this trip to the peninsula the Band also gave a concert in the City of Lliria, invited by the Musical Union of said City.
The Municipal Band received congratulations for its centenary from the Casino of Tenerife. The City Council of Gúímar has awarded the Municipal Band of Santa Cruz de Tenerife the Miguel Castillo Music Award 2003, in the Institutions category.
In November 2004, the Band travelled to Bilbao to offer different concerts at the Anzokia Basauri and the Arriaga Theatre, invited by the City Council on the occasion of our first Centenary.
In 2004, it was awarded the Gold Medal by the Arafo City Council, on the occasion of its Centenary.
During the months of July 2004 and 2005, the Band travelled again to Valencia to close the Valencia City International Music Band Festival on two occasions. It was the only Band in the history of the Festival to perform at two Closing Ceremonies, and in a consecutive manner.
Between 1 and 15 October 2004, in response to the invitation from the countries of Uruguay and Argentina, concerts were offered in the cities of Montevideo, Colonia, Maldonado and Tala in Uruguay and in the city of Buenos Aires, in Argentina.
Soloists such as Benito Cabrera, Kepa Junkera, Víctor Batista, Ernesto Chuliá and Javier Laso have participated alongside the Municipal Band. Concerts have been given under the direction of Guest Maestros such as Armando Blanquer, Jan Van der Roost, Johan de Meij and Franco Cesarini, all of them within the Closing Ceremony of the Conducting Courses held in recent years within the Municipal Band, where works by the same have been premiered, some of them being premieres in Spain and the rest of the world.
